Weekend project: Capture the Fall
This weekend your challenge is to get busy with your phone. If you’ll kindly take a moment to stop gazing adoringly into your mobile’s screen and have a look around you, you’ll notice that the times, they are a changin’. More specifically, fall is descending upon those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere and we want you to use your phone to document the arrival of this pumpkin spiced season.
Weekend Project: Magic Hour
This weekend, your mission is to capture some cinematographic magic. How? By shooting footage during the “magic hour” (sometimes called the “golden hour”), that elusive period of time where the world looks especially beautiful. The magic hour happens twice every day — the first and last hour of sunlight. Because the sun is near or just below the horizon, the natural light is soft, diffuse, and full of warm tones.

Special Weekend Project - YACHT Music Challenge
Happily ever after — it’s a nice thought, isn’t it? But don’t you ever find yourself watching the end of a film and feeling a little cheated when the main character finally gets that romantic kiss, or scores the winning point in the big game, or gallops into the sunset, victorious and happy? In the name of curiosity, don’t you ever wonder what the story would be like if the main character made the wrong decision instead?
This week, we implore you to inspect both sides of the same coin. Your challenge is to create a 3 min. narrative that has two different endings: one positive and one negative. We want to see a playful story structure, something that gives us a look into two very opposite outcomes for a single story.
In conjunction with the Free Music Archive and our new Vimeo Music Store, YACHT is generously offering instrumental versions of all the songs from their amazing new album, Shangri-La.
For this project:
- Create a 3 min. narrative video that has two endings, one positive and one negative. Just to clarify, we want you to make a single video that has two endings!
- Head to the Music Store and download both awesome instrumental YACHT tracks: Utopia and Dystopia
- Use the music to influence the mood and emphasize the difference between each of the alternate possibilities!
- Submit your video to the Weekend Project Group.

It’s time for another Vimeo Weekend Project!
Now, we’re all well aware of the power of the moving image. Whether it’s guys dropping in on thirty foot waves, a family’s first trip to Disney World or a plastic bag floating aimlessly against a brick wall, moving images have excited or comforted all of us at some point.
What we’re perhaps less accustomed to is the power of still images. More specifically, series of photographs set to sound, used to tell a story. We frequently see this used in online journalism. I suppose you could call these “slideshows,” but this time around, we’re asking you to leave the corny transitions at the door. That said, it would be more appropriate to call these “photo essays.”
Check out Connie Preti’s Fostering Love for another example of a great photo essay.
Your photo essay should be non-fiction no longer than 3 minutes and made up entirely of photographs that you take specifically for this project. All submissions are due on Tuesday, August 2nd at 11:59 PM (EST). Also, don’t forget to submit your video to the Weekend Project Group.
The winner of this contest will get a free Plus account, or if you’re already a Plus member, we’re going to let you gift the Plus to whomever you choose (along with an extra 2.5 GB of upload space)! The runner-up will receive an extra 1 GB of upload capacity whether Plus or not.

Weekend Project: Vertical Vids
Our computer screens and trips to movie theaters have biased our eyeballs. When we think of video, our first thought most likely includes films snuggled safely into the 16:9 or 4:3 format. But I’ve got to tell you, my Vimean pals— that’s not the only way! Turn a camera sideways and you’ve got a whole new world of compositional possibilities. Not convinced? Check out Jesse Rosten’s beautiful video, Beach Verticals.
This weekend, we challenge you to cast off the shackles of tradition and flip your camera 90°! But don’t let this rotation throw your aesthetic sensibilities off kilter, if you need a little inspiration, head over to the Tallscreen Channel.
The restrictions are as follows: Your video must be a vertical, static shot, between 1-2 minutes long. Think of it as a photograph that moves and use this opportunity to capture something subtle, like the slight movement of leaves in the wind, or the hint of a smile on a friends face.
The winner of the Weekend Project will receive a free Plus Account or 2 extra gigs of upload space per week if they are already Plus! The runner up will receive 1 gig of extra upload space per week.
Since we’re a bit late sending out this assignment, submissions aren’t due until Thursday (9/2) at 9:00AM (EST).
Be sure to submit your video to the Weekend Project Group, otherwise it will not be considered. Please note that the Community Staff will approve videos for inclusion into the Group and will also be selecting the winning videos.
